A Tribute to the Telephone

I once read in history books that life before the telephone was extremely difficult. Every message had to be carried on by someone, traveling by land or by sea. Thus, it takes days, weeks, even months, before messages are sent. Aside from that, a messenger's life is always under threat as bandits are abundant, just waiting for that victim to pass by their territories. The world today is very dangerous--what more was it when communication was difficult? It wasn't just the threat of bandits that puts the life of a messenger in peril. The harsh environmental conditions also contribute to this danger. Storms, droughts, sandstorms--plus a lot more! This reminded me of the Battle of Marathon where the Greek messenger died because of the long distance he had ran to deliver the message to Athens.

And so the telephone came. I was told, back in elementary school, that it was Alexander Grahambell who had invented the telephone, but I later found out that there was actually a dispute over who had really invented it. Anyway, I thank whoever the real inventor of the telephone is for making one of the greatest inventions of all time.

If it wasn't for the telephone, I am sure that globalization will not occur and, by now, we are still a bunch of "kingdoms" engaging each other in war because of the lack of communication--hence lack of understanding. If it wasn't for the telephone, there would be probably be no Internet, and you wouldn't be able to read this post. Haha. Now, the telephone comes in various forms. There are the traditional corded ones, while there are also wireless units. The mobile phone, which is increasingly making becoming a pocket-sized PC, also came. Now, I am curious. What sort of modification of the telephone will be invented? I hope that, someday, we'll be as if we're in one giant island--thanks to telecommunication.
